10 CHRISTIAN PRINCIPLES OF TREEOLOGY

“And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bring forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatever he does will prosper (Psalm 1:2).

1. Keep growing! Peter encouraged the believers to grow in the grace and knowledge of the Lord (2 Peter 3:18). Thank God for the dirt that people throw at you. God can use it to grow you for His glory.

2. Stay Rooted! Just as a tree has deep roots that helps it to remain erect, we must stay rooted in the Word of God. Roots carry water and nourishment to the tree just like the love of Christ provides spiritual nourishment to the soul (Ephesians 3:17-19).

3. Keep Reaching toward the Son. The tree is always in a state of praise and worship as it lifts its branches toward heaven.

4. Stand your ground (2 Chronicles 20:17)! When the storms come, don’t run, but stay in place. Rain transports nutrients to the root which allows the tree to grow. Keep in mind that God gives the proper balance of water, temperature and light. Every obstacle is an opportunity. Every setback is a set up for God to move. Learn to thank God for your storms! As Paul says, all things work to the good… (Romans 8:28).

5. Spread your branches. Celebrate who God made you to be. You are one of a kind! The world has room for your gifts, talents and abilities. Remember that you are fearfully and wonderfully made with purpose (Psalm 139).

6. Don’t simply be a taker, be a giver. Trees absorb carbon dioxide, but gives off oxygen for mammals to breathe. Your existence is bigger than your situation. Speak life into people (1 Thessalonians 5:11)! You will never know how much of a blessing you are to people.

7. Stay calm and peaceful (Romans 12:18). Trees never lose their cool. Peter admonishes the believers to be watchful and of a sober mind (1 Peter 1:13; 5:8, 9) because the devil is always busy trying to knock the Christian off of their game.

8. Be hospitable (Leviticus 19:34). Trees don’t mind if we run to them for shelter. We can rely on them to cover us even if they do not know us. Can people rely on you to cover them (Luke 14:12-14)?

9. Trees provide privacy. Mind your business (1 Thessalonians 4:11). You don’t have to tell everyone’s secrets.

10. Trees don’t lose heart when the season change because they know how to adapt. Embrace your season. Get what you need from each season and prepare for what is to come. Change is inevitable. During the summer, leaves absorb the sunlight, which transfers to food. Once the tree has all the food it needs for the winter, they drop the leaves in the fall. The cellular structure of the root and stem allows the tree to maintain its water and nutrients during the winter. Then in spring, leaves grow and the process begins again. Ecclesiastes 3 reminds us that there is a time for everything. Trees are able to embrace their season change because they have a strong root. The Christian can adapt to the season change if they stay rooted in the Word of God, which is Christ Jesus (John 15).
